Create + Reflect: Exploring Scripture through Creativity

Last night, the first Create + Reflect group evening was held in our Church Hub building, with 14 people joining together to explore scripture through conversation and creativity.
One of the things that makes these sessions a little different is how we begin. Before anything else, one person is invited to choose a Bible verse at random from a bowl filled with folded passages. Whatever verse is chosen becomes the focus for the evening.
For our very first session, the verse selected was simply:
'Jesus wept.” (John 11:35)
Just two words and one punctuation mark.
Yet those few words opened up a rich and thoughtful conversation about grief, empathy, vulnerability, friendship, humanity and what it means that Jesus chose to weep alongside others. It was a beautiful reminder that even the shortest passages can hold incredible depth when explored together.
After our discussion, everyone responded creatively using paint, collage and mixed media. There was no expectation to create something “good”, only an invitation to reflect, explore and express whatever resonated with them.
The feedback at the end of the evening was incredibly encouraging. Every single participant said they would recommend Create + Reflect to a friend.
Some of the comments included:
“It was so well led, helped create a good reflective atmosphere, allowing enough time for each section.”
“I loved all the different materials and tools available to try out.”
“Great atmosphere, host was very friendly and the pacing was perfect.”
“A time of relaxing fellowship.”
“Despite not being religious, I found parts of today emotional and very calming.”
“I felt free to express myself, meet lovely people and get to understand the verse more than I knew before.”
Create + Reflect is all about making room for curiosity, creativity and honest conversation. Whether you’ve been reading the Bible for years or you’re simply curious about faith, everyone is welcome to come, listen, create and reflect together.
